Case studies: Summer Internship, Ernst and Young: Teresa Mayhall

I was attracted to Ernst & Young as it is a global firm with a great reputation worldwide and a placement in the audit department would provide a number of different opportunities.

I applied online at then attended an assessment centre and an interview. I received a phone call the following day offering me a placement on the Summer Internship.

There was great variety in my placement - I was given the opportunity to work on several different clients and in several different industries.

I was surprised to be given a few projects similar to that of a graduate, in addition to the more junior tasks you’d expect to do as an intern. I feel like I had a really good opportunity to work to my strengths and develop new skills.

Everyone in my department was friendly, encouraging and went out of their way to help me achieve my potential. This made me keen to come back as a graduate and complete my three year training contract with Ernst & Young. Moving from studying to work was a fairly easy change. It was a nice break from university and helped me decide if I wanted a career with a large firm working in the audit department.

My advice is to apply early to increase your chances of being selected, then, if you get through, make the most of your time on your placement.

There are always opportunities to stretch and challenge yourself and it’s a great way to discover if accountancy is the career for you.
