Postgraduate Certificate in Low Intensity Psychological Interventions in Primary Care

What is the Post-graduate Certificate in Low Intensity Psychological Interventions?

Postgraduate (and Graduate) Certificate in Low Intensity Psychological Interventions (PG Cert) is a nationally designed qualification for workers providing low intensity interventions as part of the ‘talking therapies’ development plan for the NHS. It supports the Improving Access to Psychological Therapy (IAPT) programme.

What are its aims?

The main aim of the PG Cert is to enable workers to develop recognised competencies including core skills and core values for inclusive and sensitive reflective practice with diverse populations. In addition to generic therapeutic skills it will train workers in a range of low intensity cognitive-behavioural interventions, including guided self-help, to help people recover from common mental health problems.

Who accredits and validates the training?

The PG Cert is academically validated by the University of Birmingham. It is professionally accredited by the British Psychological Society’s (BPS) Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner Accreditation Committee (PWPAC).

Who delivers it?

The PG Cert is a Collaborative Programme run by the Birmingham and Black Country Training Consortium comprising Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Foundation Trust and the University of Birmingham. The consortium will work in close partnership with your employing agency.

What is its structure?

The programme runs for one calendar year and consists of 30 teaching days, 15 directed learning days, and several other days attendance for assessments. It is assessed via examinations, assignments and observed practice on the programme and in the workplace. The programme team and clinical supervisors are closely involved in assessment of skills. The three modules are:

* Engagement and assessment of patients with common mental health problems

* Evidence based low intensity treatment for common mental health disorders

* Values diversity and context

Some posts within Coventry and Warwickshire Mind are exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 as they involve working with vulnerable adults and/or children and young people and will require a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
